The ingredients needed to make Rassam:
  1. Prepare Rassam Powder
  2. Take 1/2 cup coriander seeds
  3. Take 1/4 cup cumin seeds
  4. Prepare 2 inch cinnamon stick
  5. Take 1 tsp black pepper
  6. Make ready 8-10 dry red chillies
  7. Make ready 1/2 tsp methi (fenugreek) seeds
  8. Get 1 tbsp toor dal
  9. Make ready Rassam
  10. Prepare 2 tbsp cooked toor dal
  11. Take 1 tomato chopped
  12. Take 1/2 cup tamarind juice or 2 tsp lemon juice
  13. Make ready 200 ml water
  14. Take 1 tsp ghee
  15. Get 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  16. Take 1/2 tsp turmeric
  17. Get 4-5 curry leaves
  18. Take 1 green chilly
  19. Make ready salt as per taste
  20. Get coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions to make Rassam:
  1. Dry roast all ingredients for rassam powder for 2-3 mins. Allow them to cool.
  2. Grind them together to make rassam powder and store in a jar. The powder can be stored for 2 months.
  3. To make rassam, saute tomato in ghee for 2 mins. When tomato gets soft add water and let it boil.
  4. Add hing, salt and 2 tsp prepared rassam powder, turmeric, tamarind/lemon juice and cooked dal and boil it for 5 mins.
  5. Prepare tempering by heating some ghee in pan and then add mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves, green chilly. Top the rassam with this tempering and keep it covered.
  6. Garnish with coriander and serve it hot with rice, vada or just as a soup.
